A practical step-by-step guide to building a Small Parts Storage System

Hobbyshop woodworking project. The ultimate customisable Small Parts Storage System

A modular and customizable Small Parts Storage System

A compact, Modular Small-Parts Organizer — Built for a Busy Woodshop

I designed and built this compact, modular small-parts organizer to solve the daily clutter of screws, nails, washers, and hardware in my woodworking shop. We have all purchased items and dumped them into a drawer, never to be seen or heard again. We know we have them, but can not find them, this is a common issue that I have struggled with for years. As with all problems, we try to solve them, and that is where my New Small Parts Organiser comes in

I designed and built this small parts organizer specifically for hobbyist woodworkers who like a challenge and prefer solutions made for their needs — not another generic plastic box from the hardware store. I’ve learned a lot from past projects, and this unit reflects those lessons.

Features:

  • Fully removable drawers: take a drawer with you to your bench or job site, then pop it back in when you’re done.
  • See-through drawer fronts: quickly identify parts without removing the drawer.
  • Fully expandable design: add extra drawers as your collection grows or your needs change.

In this video I walk through the design choices, construction steps, and finishing touches, plus tips I learned along the way. If you’re a maker who prefers purpose-built gear, this one’s for you.

The Drawer System can be expanded to suit your needs.

Please note that there are printable STL files available to assist with certain parts of the project. Below are the 4 STL files and their descriptions.

Bin Holder– This item is used to help support the bin when you are using it around your workshop and not in the bin rack.

Printable Bin– If you don’t wish to build the storage bins out of wood, they can be 3D printed using this file.

Box assembly Blank– This is a jig used to help assemble the boxes.

Shelf Spacer– This jig is used to give consistent spacing of the shelves/boxes
