A Simple, Easy-to-Build DIY Couch Armrest Shelf

Hobbyshop woodworking project. No plan required, just some measuring and a few cuts.

Note that there is no plan for the DIY Couch Armrest Shelf. It is so simple and easy to make that we are going to explain how to build it with the use of some pictures.

Inspired by Instagram: Built to keep my wife happy.

I had some scrap wood left over from a build that I had done previously and wanted to disassemble it for firewood. A friend of mine convinced me that it could be repurposed. Fast forward a few weeks, and my wife placed her chocolate iced muffin on our couch’s armrest. Needless to say, it did not stay upright for long and ended up staining our new couch. A few hours later, a few pictures and videos were being sent of these storage shelves that fit snugly over the armrest to provide a flat surface for cups, mugs or even food. I have the wood and the 5 minutes it took to assemble the armrest, so why not? It turns out this is one of the most practical and used items in our house now! I even had a few requests from friends to make them, after seeing and using ours, the bug had bitten!

How to build the DIY Couch Armrest Shelf?

1.) The first step is to measure the width of your Couch Armrest. This can be a little tricky as they are not perfectly square, but you do have a lot of leeway, as the cushioning can be slightly compressed if you make it too small. It is important that is fit snugly as this will help to keep it stable and level.

2.)The second step is to decide on the length of the supports that run along the side of the armrest. I simply decided to make them around 14 cm or 5 1\2″ long as this would provide plenty of stability. There is no set measurement for this; it will depend on the height of your armrest.

3.) Decide on the joinery you would like to use. In this case, I opted to just use a simple butjoint along with some pocket holes and glue. You could get elaborate and use dovetails or cut a 45′ and use a spline, the choices are endless and completely up to you.
